Handouts: As we continue our efforts to become more “green” we will be reducing printed handouts and moving towards distributing power points and resources electronically. For this and future Children's Mental Health Grand Rounds trainings, you will receive the handouts as an attachment in your final confirmation e-mails, which are sent prior to the training. Print copies of handouts WILL NOT be provided by DWMHA for this training.
Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.
Training Description: Identifying and treating substance use throughout the course of mental health treatment can be complex, especially when working with youth who have a caregiver involved in their services. It is important for clinicians to have skills to identify signs and symptoms of intoxication and withdrawal, particularly when substance use isn't disclosed. Once substance use is identified or suspected, this training will aid in what to do next and how to effectively intervene.
Learning Objectives:
Identifying symptoms of intoxication and withdrawal
Understand differential diagnoses and how to further assess
Stages of change assessment and how to recognize change talk
Stage matched treatment: intervention tools to use matched to client stage of change
Continuing Education Credits: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training. Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety. You must have your license number when you check in.
- Social Workers: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training.
- Counselors: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. The VCE is a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
- Substance Abuse Professionals: 2.0 Non-Specific Continuing Education Credits are approved by MCBAP for substance use professionals, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADC).
- Children's Mental Health Professionals (CMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
- Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.
Registration/Walk In Policy: Participants may attempt to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register). However, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
