HandoutsAs we continue our efforts to become more “green” we will be reducing printed handouts and moving towards distributing power points and resources electronically. For this and future Children's Mental Health Grand Rounds trainings, you will receive the handouts as an attachment in your final confirmation e-mails, which are sent prior to the training. Print copies of handouts WILL NOT be provided by DWMHA for this training.

Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.


Training Description: Mental Health and wellness are critical to student success: emotionally, behaviorally, and academically. School-based mental health services include individual, family and group therapy provided directly in a natural setting, as well as crisis intervention. Programs should be tailored to the needs and culture of each unique school community that they serve. 

School-based services increase access to mental health care, promote a positive school climate, and provide an deal context for prevention and intervention. Beyond stuednts, in-school services provide an opportunity to educate and collaborate with administration, teachers and staff regarding mental health diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment. Effective school-based mental services are essential in creating a school environment that is safe, resourceful and supportive. 

Course Objectives:

Participants will gainknowledge and understanding on: 

  1. The comprehensive nature of school-based services
  2. The unique features of a school-based mental health program including; 

           A) The comprehensive nature of school-based services

           B) Strengths and challenges of implementing services in a natural setting;

           C) Navigating roles on a multidisciplinary team

       3. Effective screening and referral processes

       4. Differentiating and collaboration between mental health services and special education services

       5. The impact that mental health services have within the school and community

About the Speaker(s):
 
Rebecca Nieman is the employed with the Development Centers Inc.(DCI) as the School based Services Manager. She is a highly skilled licensed clinical social worker with strong clinical skills; experience in working with children, adolescents and families in school-based and outpatient mental health settings.
 
Krista Wielard is a Clinical Therapist with the Development Centers Inc., Ms. Wielard provides on-site therapeutic services for children, youth and families focused on severe emotional disturbances. She works with a team of multi-disciplinary clinical staff in planning and implementing treatment activities tailored for specific student populations.
 
Candace Ziglor is also a Clinical Therapist with the Development CentersINc. Ms. Ziglor is a motivated and experienced counselor with experience in assessments, intakes and evaluations. She effectively applies ethical principles and practices while working in an interdisciplinary team.  In her work with DCI, she provides on-site direct and in-direct services with children, youth youth and families.  

Continuing Education Credits: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training. Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.  You must have your license number when you check in.

  • Social Workers:  2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. 
  • Counselors: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. The VCE is a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
  • Substance Abuse Professionals: 2.0 Non-Specific Continuing Education Credits are approved by MCBAP for substance use professionals, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADC).
  • Children's Mental Health Professionals (CMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
  • Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.
  • Medical Professionals: The Wayne State University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians. 

The Wayne State University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


Registration/Walk In Policy: Participants may attempt to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register). However, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
