Description

Third Wave Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a presentation appropriate for any mental or behavioral health clinician who is interested in learning new evidence-based practices for intervening effectively with clients with presenting problems including chronic pain, stress, anxiety, depression, excessive behaviors such as overeating and abusing substances, rumination and borderline personality features. Attendees will learn the theory and principles behind the modern behavior therapies, and differences between these therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for Depression. An overview of the interventions will be provided, in addition to samples of psychotherapy and client exercises. Finally, resources for learning more will be offered.

In recent years, the greatest growth in use of the third wave therapies has been in the social work arena. Social workers are utilizing and advancing the practice of the modern behavior therapies.

The third wave therapies have been utilized successfully cross-culturally. Cross cultural data and case examples will be presented. These therapies are borne of the assumption that people are not problematic, but contexts creates problematic responses in them.

Learning Objectives:

1. Students will learn what makes the "third wave" CBTs different from second wave interventions

2. Students will learn that mindfulness and emotional acceptance are the foundational skills underlying these interventions.

3. Students will learn how mindfulness is taught and accessed differently in different therapeutic approaches.

Suggested Participants: Wayne County Change Agents, Physicians, Mental Health, Substance Abuse, Human Services, Health Care and Direct Care Professionals, Peer Support Specialists, Consumers, and Advocates working and receiving services in the Detroit-Wayne County Community Mental Health Agency network of mental health, substance abuse and developmental disabilities services.
