It is highly recommended that those attending this event in-person be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. We will require that all in attendance wear a mask regardless of vaccination status. You will also be required to complete a brief screening.

Purpose:

This conference is designed to bring awareness to help individuals understand various factors associated with youth violence and how to recognize signs of such and prevent escalation. The overall goal is for attendees to leave feeling hopeful and ready to support the young people that they are responsible for personally or professionally.

Problem:

An estimated 220,000 students have experienced a shooting at their schools. There have been 21 school shootings since Aug. 1, 2021—already double the number of school shootings in all of 2020, according to an Education Week tracker. This year has also brought an increase in shootings over pre-pandemic figures. There have been 29 school shootings in 2021 thus far, killing 11 people and injuring 49, compared to 24 school shootings in both 2018 and 2019, according to Education Week. In 2020, three people were killed and nine were injured in school shootings.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, as of November 30, 2021 thus far, in the United States, 1,401 children have died because of gun violence.

Audience

Case managers, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, licensed professional counselors, educators, school personnel, mental health professionals, clinicians, nurses, health and human service practitioners, law enforcement and other professionals that engage youth.

-QUALIFIED MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (QMHP): These (4) event hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.

-TRAINING HOURS: This event will count (4) hours towards the annual training hours required by most provider agencies.
