Difficult behavior change is a challenge faced by individuals of every ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Becoming
equipped with effective methods and skills for assisting individuals in improving their health and well-being is
consistent with many of the values of the Social Work profession especially as services are provided with appropriate cultural humility, recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of each person, and striving to relate to each person in a competent and trustworthy manner that maximizes the likelihood of being able to assist each person to accomplish their change targets.

Objectives:

1. Describe motivational interviewing/motivational enhancement and its 4-phase intervention hierarchy.
2. Describe motivational interviewing's philosophical underpinnings, as reflected in its 5 core principles.
3. Identify and avoid 6 major traps that would interfere with helping ambivalent clients change.
4. Describe the 5 basic tools/skills of motivational interviewing.
