The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, through the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan, has provided funding for this initiative through Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant.
Course Objectives:
- Describe the diagnosis and psychopathology of PTSD
- Discuss emotional processing theory as it relates to Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD
- Discuss how avoidance maintaining PTSD symptoms
- Discuss how avoidance will be addressed in Prolonged Exposure Therapy
- Discuss empirically supported, psychotherapeutic treatments for chronic PTSD
- Discuss the comparative efficacy of these treatment approaches
- Identify evidence-based tools for PTSD assessment
- Learn how to effectively administer evidence-based tools for PTSD assessment
- Describe why evidence-based self-report measures are used throughout Prolonged Exposure Therapy
- Learn inclusion and exclusion criteria for identifying an appropriate client for Prolonged Exposure Therapy
- Explain overall treatment rationale for Prolonged Exposure Therapy
- Explain in vivo exposure rationale for Prolonged Exposure Therapy
- Explain imaginal exposure rationale for Prolonged Exposure Therapy
- Explain how clients can be helped to engage their index trauma memory effectively emotionally, with the aim of reducing trauma-related symptoms and difficulties
- Explain methods for assisting clients to effectively process traumatic memories, with the aim of reducing trauma-related symptoms and difficulties
- Implement psychoeducational treatment components of Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD
- Construct an in-vivo exposure hierarchy that includes a range of situations that safely and effectively promote learning while expanding the client’s world
- Implement in-vivo exposure to safe but avoided trauma reminders with patients
- Develop an understanding of the role of safety behaviors in maintaining PTSD symptoms
- Learn how to identify safety behaviors impeding habituation during exposure interventions
- Help patients choose an appropriate index trauma to focus on in Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD
- Learn how to implement imaginal exposure to memories of traumatic events
- Learn strategies for assisting clients to choose hot spots with patients and implement hot spots procedures
- Identify and address various forms of avoidance presenting during PE sessions
- Learn strategies for addressing treatment resistance and homework non-compliance in Prolonged Exposure Therapy
- Identify and address over- and under-engagement in imaginal exposure
- Describe components of a final session of Prolonged Exposure therapy, including how to address relapse prevention

- Safety Guidelines for in Vivo exposure
- Assignment of in Vivo Homework
- Rationale for imaginal exposure
- Procedure for imaginal exposure
- Reluctance to do exposure, avoidance of homework, missing therapy sessions
- Social Workers: This course qualifies for a maximum of 26 continuing education hours. The Community Mental Health Association is an approved provider with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. Approved Provider Number: MICEC 060818.
- Staff must attend all 4 days to receive CEs and follow the virtual participation guidelines outlined on this flyer.
- Staff must arrive within five minutes of the start of the training and remain visible during the entire training.
- Staff must have their video on during the training to receive CEs.
- Certificates will be emailed to participants following the training and completion of the training evaluation.
