Course Description:
This intensive workshop on how to implement Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy begins with instruction on the basics of all components of PE. The second half of the workshop will focus on modifications to tailor treatment procedures to the client’s response to exposure. Maintaining focus on treatment of PTSD while maintaining flexibility in adherence to the PE protocol will be emphasized. Participants will view video-taped case vignettes illustrating delivery of all PE components to individuals with chronic PTSD by experts. Participants will be given the opportunity to practice PE procedures with other attendees with feedback from faculty trainers. PE treatment manuals and supporting materials used in providing the therapy will be provided.
 
Who Should Attend:
This 4-day training is for both new and experienced clinicians (serving as a “refresher” training for those who have previously taken it). This training is for master’s level or above clinical staff working with Adults or Adolescents or supervising those that do.

Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network will provide the materials.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, through the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan, has provided funding for this initiative through Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant.

Course Objectives:

  1. Describe the diagnosis and psychopathology of PTSD
  2. Discuss emotional processing theory as it relates to Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD
  3. Discuss how avoidance maintaining PTSD symptoms
  4. Discuss how avoidance will be addressed in Prolonged Exposure Therapy
  5. Discuss empirically supported, psychotherapeutic treatments for chronic PTSD
  6. Discuss the comparative efficacy of these treatment approaches
  7. Identify evidence-based tools for PTSD assessment
  8. Learn how to effectively administer evidence-based tools for PTSD assessment
  9. Describe why evidence-based self-report measures are used throughout Prolonged Exposure Therapy
  10. Learn inclusion and exclusion criteria for identifying an appropriate client for Prolonged Exposure Therapy
  11. Explain overall treatment rationale for Prolonged Exposure Therapy
  12. Explain in vivo exposure rationale for Prolonged Exposure Therapy
  13. Explain imaginal exposure rationale for Prolonged Exposure Therapy
  14. Explain how clients can be helped to engage their index trauma memory effectively emotionally, with the aim of reducing trauma-related symptoms and difficulties
  15. Explain methods for assisting clients to effectively process traumatic memories, with the aim of reducing trauma-related symptoms and difficulties
  16. Implement psychoeducational treatment components of Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD
  17. Construct an in-vivo exposure hierarchy that includes a range of situations that safely and effectively promote learning while expanding the client’s world
  18. Implement in-vivo exposure to safe but avoided trauma reminders with patients
  19. Develop an understanding of the role of safety behaviors in maintaining PTSD symptoms
  20. Learn how to identify safety behaviors impeding habituation during exposure interventions
  21. Help patients choose an appropriate index trauma to focus on in Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD
  22. Learn how to implement imaginal exposure to memories of traumatic events
  23. Learn strategies for assisting clients to choose hot spots with patients and implement hot spots procedures
  24. Identify and address various forms of avoidance presenting during PE sessions
  25. Learn strategies for addressing treatment resistance and homework non-compliance in Prolonged Exposure Therapy
  26. Identify and address over- and under-engagement in imaginal exposure
  27. Describe components of a final session of Prolonged Exposure therapy, including how to address relapse prevention

Continuing Education Requirements:
  • Social Workers: This course qualifies for a maximum of 26 continuing education hours. The Community Mental Health Association is an approved provider with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. Approved Provider Number: MICEC 060818.
  • Staff must attend all 4 days to receive CEs and follow the virtual participation guidelines outlined on this flyer.
  • Staff must arrive within five minutes of the start of the training and remain visible during the entire training.
  • Staff must have their video on during the training to receive CEs.
  • Certificates will be emailed to participants following the training and completion of the training evaluation.
