Course Description:

This presentation examines the issues and dilemmas that social workers, psychologists and service providers encounter in the field of mental health. The information includes strategies to identify and resolve legal and ethical dilemmas that arise in professional practice, and to recognize situations in practice that present the greatest risks to the client as well as the clinician. The Social Work Code of Ethics is used as a tool to explore and highlight the social worker’s duties and responsibilities in assuring the well-being and protection of their clients. Topics include client confidentiality, privacy and privilege in the therapeutic relationship, record keeping, conflicts of interest, informed consent, cultural and social diversity and competency. The discussion will also explore the changes in the field of mental health due to the ever expanding role of technology in the delivery of services and the new ethical and legal issues that have arisen as a result. The incorporation of strategies and problem solving skills presented in this seminar may be used to assist social workers in maintaining an emotionally safe and therapeutic relationship with their clients/consumers.

Course Objectives:

• Learn strategies to identify and resolve ethical dilemmas that arise in professional practice

• Apply the latest Revisions to the Social Work Code of Ethics (2021) addressing Self-Care and Cultural Competence to your professional practice

• Realize that multiple relationships can be exploitative or cause harm

• Learn ways to maintain ethical competence in new areas of practice, including telehealth and social media sites.

9:30am-10:00am Review revisions to Social Work Code of Ethics (2021) and Incorporating Self-Care and Cultural Competency into Practice

10:00am-10:30am Explore the dangers of multiple relationships

10:30am-11:00am Discuss how to maintain ethical competence in telehealth as well as social media platforms
