Course Description

Prepare to be engaged and informed with our unique session, featuring a Naloxone training conducted by Ahmad Bailout, followed by a discussion with a Healthcare Professional on the critical role of acute care prescribing in combatting the opioid epidemic. 
 
During the session, we will highlight how prescribing opioids after surgery has directly impacted the opioid epidemic in the US and Canada. They will share how the same factors that increased prescribing and morbidity are currently spreading around the world due to changes in opioid prescribing and postoperative care patterns. 
 
The presentation will delve deeper into the effects of increased opioid prescribing after surgery, highlighting how it does not improve pain or satisfaction but is associated with increased new chronic use, morbidity, and cost of care. 

Course Objectives

  • Recognize the signs of opioid overdose and intoxication
  • Describe the pharmacology of naloxone and administer naloxone properly to reverse a known or suspected overdose 
  • List steps on how to care for an individual after the administration of naloxone
  • Educate patients and providers about best practices acute care pain management 
  • Describe the importance of using a standardized screening tool to detect risky substance use and best practices for implementation 

CEU Credits

1.5 (MCBAP) - This training meets the MDHHS requirement for Michigan Certified Board of Addictions Professionals

1.5 Training Hour - This training offers general training hours.
