Course Description:

Join the Ruth Ellis Center for a special LGBTQ Pride Month Grand Rounds where we will view and discuss “Treasure” which tells the story of Shelley "Treasure" Hillard, a 19-year-old trans woman of color from Detroit, who was coerced into informing on a drug dealer and had her identity divulged by police—and was brutally murdered as result. In the film, Hampton raises critical questions about the circumstances surrounding the crime and highlights the stories of her loved ones who have turned themselves into activists and community organizers galvanized by her story. Participants will reflect on the impact of Jim Crow drug laws, the vulnerability of youth police informants, and violence toward the transgender community.
