Speaker Bio: 

Dr. La-Toya Gaines is the owner and CEO of Family Matters Counseling and Psychological Services. Dr. Gaines obtained her doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the Michigan School of Psychology in 2012. While working to obtain her degree, she gained experience in providing mental health treatment in various settings including juvenile justice programs, community mental health, and private practice. Dr. Gaines also worked as an adjunct professor at Oakland Community College and as a core faculty member at The Michigan School of Psychology teaching both master and doctoral level students. Additionally, she has provided clinical supervision to graduate students during their clinical practicum and internship placements. In the role of owner and CEO of Family Matters Counseling and Psychological Services, Dr. Gaines provide mental health treatment to teens, families and individuals seeking help with anxiety, depression, and trauma. She also specializes in working with blended, separated, and divorced families helping them to cope with the changes in their family, learning skills to communicate with their children and to co-parent more effectively. While running the practice, she also provides clinical supervision and oversight to five clinicians as well as manage an administrative team of two individuals. Dr. Gaines enjoys relationships with community partners by accepting invitations to speak, present at workshops, or serve as a panelist. Some of those experiences include working with the Women and Girls: HIV and AIDS Awareness Day at Detroit Recovery Project, The Kids Empowerment Summit sponsored by Kids Empowered, Association of Black Psychologists Midwest Regional Symposium, and serving as keynote speaker for the Psi Chi Induction Ceremony at the Michigan School of Psychology

Course Descriptions: 

This 4 part training series will focus on the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects of vicarious trauma in mental health providers. Participants will identify ways to reignite motivation and passion for their work and develop a plan for whole self-care to reduce the impact of vicarious trauma.

Course Objectives: 

● Vicarious trauma and the supervisory relationship

● Identify ways managers can support and encourage self-care in team members

● Review your whole self-care habits and challenges to maintaining it
