Children's Mental Health Grand Rounds will be available at 5 locations (4 via video-conference plus the live site.) Attendees will be able to share ideas, network, carpool and receive Continuing Education Credits.  Please read details and registration instructions below.

HandoutsAs VCE continues its efforts to become more “green” we will be reducing printed handouts and moving towards distributing power points and resources electronically. For this and future Children's Mental Health Grand Rounds trainings, you will receive the handouts as an attachment in your final confirmation e-mails, which are sent several days prior to the training. Print copies of handouts WILL NOT be provided by VCE for this training.


Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.

Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.


Training Description

This training will cover an overview of available resources for families in treatment and guidance on accessing the ASD Applied Behavior Analysis Benefit. This training offers an overview of the characteristics of autism that result in higher crisis rates, understanding of medical, sensory, and behavioral factors, as well as techniques in de-escalation and management of high risk behavior and physical aggression. Trainees will leave with the skills to contribute as a member of a crisis care team or to build a crisis resource plan for a family. Trainees will receive a ASD Crisis Kit as a resource to utilize in treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn four different ASD resources available to families with children with ASD and how to utilize the resources for successful treatment outcomes. 
  2. Learn of the recent ASD ABA Service Expansion of the roles that each of us play in the process of ensuring successful outcomes.
  3. Learn and understand crisis as it relates to an individual with ASD.
  4. Identify different methods and general techniques to de-escalate a potential crisis situation. 
  5. Understand the ASD Tool Kit and how to best utilize it with families in services

About the Speakers:

Nicole Dwyer, MA, LPC is the Autism Benefit Clinical Specialist for Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority, where she has led in the development and implementation of the Medicaid Autism Benefit in Wayne County. Prior to this role, she established the Medicaid Autism Benefit in Macomb County. She currently serves on the Michigan 

Autism Council Early Intervention Subcommittee and sits on the Metro Region Autism Collaborative with Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties. She has conducted, published, and presented research on dual diagnosis (MI/DD) involving parental stress, attachment and bonding in families of individuals with developmental disabilities. 

Tammy Morris, M.A., CCC-SLP is the Chief Program Ofïcer for the Autism Alliance of Michigan. She is a licensed Speech/Language Pathologist with nearly 20 years of experience providing evaluation, diagnostic and intervention services to children with developmental communication disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorders. Over the past 20 years Tammy has worked in a variety of healthcare and educational settings, with both children and adults with special health care needs and challenges. She has worked as faculty at several Michigan Universities in the fields of speech-language and special education. She was the Director of the Approved Autism Evaluation Center at Oakwood Healthcare. She has a longstanding record of creating multidisciplinary teams and programs in healthcare, working tirelessly to improve inter-disciplinary training to move providers from their individual silos and toward collaboration. 


Continuing Education Credits:  3.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training.  Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.  You must have your license number when you check in.

  • Social Workers:  3.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. 
  • Counselors: 3.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. The VCE is a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
  • Children's Mental Health Professionals (CMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
  • Qualifies Mental Health Professionals (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.
  • Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professionals (QIDP):These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QIDP staff. 
  • Medical Professionals: The Wayne State University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians. 

The Wayne State University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 3.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


Registration/Walk In Policy: Participants may attempt to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register). However, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
