Suggested Participants:
Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This session is primarily designed for mental health professionals, health care providers and social service professionals to provide guidelines on suicide treatment and management by identifying risk factors and protective in addition to reduction of lethal means.
OBJECTIVES
• Discussion on reducing access to lethal means is an evidence-based strategy for suicide prevention.
• Explain how reducing access to lethal means can prevent suicide.
• Discussion of both risk and protective factors within different ethnic and racial groups.
• Identifying clients for whom lethal means counseling is appropriate.
