Course Description:
Supporting Growth through Opportunity & Choices: This training module was developed by and for Michigan direct support professionals interested in learning more about empowering consumers, by providing them with the opportunity to make their own decisions. In this session, general information will be discussed about how to give people with disabilities choices. You will participate in activities that will help you to avoid influencing consumers so that they may have the opportunity to make their own choices. Person-Centered Planning: Valuing the Contributions of Direct Support Professionals: This training module was developed by and for Michigan direct support professionals interested in learning more about the person-centered planning process. In this session, we will discuss general information about person-centered planning. You will have the opportunity to think about what you can do to increase your knowledge and skills about the person-centered planning process.
Course Objectives:
- Supporting Growth through Opportunity & Choices: Understand the definition of choice. Understand why people need choices. Understanding why you may want to make choices for someone. Identify three ways to assist you in supporting the individual’s choices. Learn about what to read & who to call for more information Person-Centered Planning: Valuing the Contributions of Direct Support Professionals: Understand the definition of person-centered planning Understand the contributions of direct support professionals Identify 10 ways to contribute to the person-centered planning process starting tomorrow! Try 5 new person-centered planning methods within the next 3 months Learn about what to read & who to call for more information
- Define dual diagnosis
- Identify 3 facts about mental health
- State 3 risk factors that make people with intellectual disabilities more vulnerable to mental illness
- Identify 3 signs of mental illness in individuals with intellectual disabilities
- Identify 2 things you can do if you support an individual who may have a mental health issues in addition to an intellectual disability
