“Rolling with Resistance” is a well-known principle of Motivational Interviewing, however many struggle to apply and navigate the techniques when confronted with resistance. This presentation will assist case workers in identifying the various sources of resistance and ways to respond to it. It will analyze how resistance is experienced by both the consumer and the clinician/case worker. Finally, it will provide techniques to reduce resistance, counter-transference, and other related obstacles of treatment. The Stages of Change will be presented and stage-appropriate responses will be explored.
Learning Objectives:
- Define resistance and ways it is presented in treatment
- recognize 2-3 unproductive ways case workers respond to challenges with consumers
- Differentiate between the 6 Stages of Change, including relapse
- Apply 4 Motivational Interviewing techniques (OARS) to respond to resistance
